The American Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that by the year 2020 there will be an additional 47,000 limo drivers operating in the United States. If you are hoping to be one of them, here is everything you need to know about becoming a limo driver.
Contact the State DMV
Before you commit yourself to anything, you need to contact your state DMV (department of motor vehicles) to ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements. In most states, this simply means that you need to meet the minimum age and citizenship requirements. For example, in New York a limo driver must be at least 19 years old and be a full citizen of the United States.
Check You Have a Clean Record
If you don’t have a clean driving license, limousine companies might be reluctant to hire you. When you speak to the DMV, ask them to provide you with a copy of your driving record. You will have to pay a small fee for doing so, but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you find any unexpected blemishes on your record, you should speak to the DMV about rectifying it
Obtain the Correct Licensing
You will need to complete a CDL (commercial drivers license) application. This credential is sometimes known as a chauffeurs’ permit, you can apply for it at the DMV.
Once you have completed the form, you then need to submit it and pay a processing fee. You will need to submit proof of vehicle insurance for the limousine that you intend to use as your chauffeur vehicle.
Pass the Relevant Exam
In order to obtain your CDL, you will need to pass a written exam. In general, there isn’t a practical element to this test, meaning that you won’t have to go out on the road and demonstrate your knowledge.
Some DMVs will offer study guides for the CDL exam and these can be extremely helpful. If they are available, they are worth getting. If you are planning on becoming an airport limo driver, you will need to submit to drug testing, fingerprinting, and a criminal record background check.
Apply to an Existing Company
You may well hope to one day make money independently with your limousine driving. However, for most people this will be an unrealistic starting goal. It is best to get some experience under your belt while working with an established limousine company, such as Door-to-door limos.
When you are applying for jobs with limousine companies, make sure that you have all the relevant paperwork in order to submit your application. Remember to include details of all the documentation you have with your resume.
Becoming a limousine driver is an excellent career choice for anyone who wants to be able to make money with their vehicle, and who enjoys working with clients and customers in providing a service. The job of a limo driver can be surprisingly varied; it is a job that is rarely boring.
